Slugs

Them come in many shapes and sizes, well if you can really call that a shape.  What are they anyway?  A snail without a shell basically.  There are many different varieties, and they can wreak havoc on your garden.  Even if you start out slug-free, they can arrive via potted plant, or even all the way from your neighbor's yard.  If you want to de-slug your garden, here are a few options.  Some slugs are actually edible, but there's bound to be a better method.  You can keep slugs as pets, but they tend to not listen, and won't stay on their leash.  The salt thing?  Let's not go there.  One easy fix is setting a beer trap.  It's easy.  Open a beer, set a sip or two aside for the slugs in a shallow container, press it into your garden soil, and presto, it'll be filled with slugs in the morning.  Enjoy the rest of your beer and rest easy knowing the slugs went out feeling no pain.

Good Cry

Babies cry for a reason, to let the world know there's something wrong and to get some attention. While it may not be wise to start wailing in public when something's off, it's in our best interest to let it out sooner or later. John Ryder, Ph.D., and author of Positive Directions gives us some tips on how to have a good, productive cry.

Let yourself go. Crying tends to slow our breathing, having a calming effect. You'll get more out of that cry when you go with the flow.
Determine the source. Sometimes tears seem to come out of nowhere. If something relatively small sets you off, try to determine what's going on underneath the surface.
Find a shoulder. We tend to cry when we need support, and a good friend with a sympathetic ear can really have a healing touch.
There are bound to be emotional situations when you'd prefer NOT to cry. Taking a few steps ahead of time could help. Take a few deep controlled breaths, and relax any muscles that are holding tension. Focus on the memory of a time you felt strong or accomplished something. Don't forget to let it out later. A good cry at the right time could be just what you need to move forward.

 Picking Flowers

Picking wildflowers, sounds easy enough, but there’s a right way to do it.  I’ll tell you how to pick like a pro, in a moment.   Weather you’re off to the wilderness, or just to your yard or flowerbox, we’ve got some flower picking tips fresh from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  First of all, don’t pick, cut.  Here’s what you’ll need for the outing.

  • Sharp sheers or a knife.
  • String or rubber bands for binding.
  • Gloves or tongs for the prickly varieties.
  • Containers of water with a few drops of bleach.

Cutting flowers early in the morning, or late in the day is best.  Make sure to shake off any bugs, and strip excess leaves and thorns from the stems, and get them into the water as soon as possible.  With wildflowers, take note of how many are in the area, and leave blossoms on the plant your cutting from to avoid depleting the population.
