Words Of Wisdom

_________________________________________________________________________________________

what's in a name?

We tend to take band names for granted once we get used to hearing them, but some of them have pretty interesting origins.  Here are just a few:

THE BEATLES - Original member Stuart Sutcliffe came up with THE BEETLES , as a play on Buddy Holly's group THE CRICKETS who they loved. However, John Lennon was fond of saying he had a vision as a child of a flaming pie in the sky that said "You are Beatles with an "A".

CHICAGO - Their first album was released as "Chicago Transit Authority", but the city of Chicago sued them because Chicago Transit Authority is the name of Chicago's public transportation department so they shortened it. Don't record companies check these things before they release them?

CHUBBY CHECKER - the host of American Bandstand (once the most popular American music TV show) Dick Clark's wife thought up the name as a take off on singer Fats Domino. Chubby "invented" the dance called "the twist"

FOO FIGHTERS - a term used by World War II pilots to describe strange flying fireballs they sometimes saw.

GOO GOO DOLLS - used to be called the Sex Maggots, and when they were told that local newspapers wouldn't print that name, Jonny Rzeznik picked up a magazine from the early 60's with an ad for a doll that cried Goo Goo when you turned it upside down.

JETHRO TULL - popular 70's band that is named after the rather obscure inventor of the farmer's seed drill.

KISS - According to Paul Stanley, Kiss just sounded dangerous (kiss of death) and sexy at the same time. Kiss denies the rumors that the name stands for "Kids In Service of Satan" or the saying "Keep It Simple Stupid."

RAMONES - Paul McCartney used to call himself Paul Ramone. The Ramones all use the last name Ramone even though it's not their given name.

R.E.M. - in the study of dreams, the abbreviation refers to rapid eye movement or that time during sleep when an observable movement of the eyeball occurs indicating that the person is in a dream state. Band member Michael Stipe has said that this is not why the band picked the name.

U2 - Three possibilities: 1) A type of spy plane used by the United States in the 1960's - made famous when Gary Powers' U2 plane was shot down over Russia and he was taken as a
prisoner during the Cold War. 2) U2 as in "you too" referring to the audience and its role in the musical experience 3) a U2 is an unemployment form in Ireland (see UB40)

UB40 - Code number of a form people in Britain have to fill out to receive public assistance or welfare. Known in the UK as a signing-off form when you get a job. Hence the title of their first album Signing Off.

Not On The Table!

What could potentially end up on your kitchen table or counter, that's just been dragged on the ground or on the icky floor of a school bus? The backpack. It's not uncommon for a kid to heave that thing right onto the nearest surface when they get home from school. You might even do it yourself if you've got little ones with lots of papers to sort out. Let's face it, it's easier than bending over to drag the stuff out. Just think about where that backpack might have just been. We'll spare you the gory details of what might be found on a school bus seat, floor, or on the ground at the bus stop. It's not a bad idea to lay down some newspaper first, or a paper or plastic shopping bag you might keep stored in the kitchen.

By the way mom and dad, the same rule can apply to briefcases and pocket books.

Once Bitten

It never fails, there's always someone in the group who seems to attract more mosquitos. Maybe it's you! According to research, some people give off masking odors that keep mosquitos from finding them, while some of us smell like a juicy steak to a mosquito. Unfortunately, without bug spray, there's not much we can do to hide the odors we have that mosquitos like. For instance, blood type may have something to do with it. Type O's are mmm mmm good to a mosquito.

They also really like you if you happen to be pregnant. Pregnant women exhale 21% more carbon dioxide, and are over a degree warmer around the belly. You might as well put a bulls eye there. Oh, and if you're not pregnant, you're not off the bite hook. If you enjoy a summer cocktail, you're asking for it. Skin markers change when metabolizing alcohol, and mosquitos will drink to that.

 Eye Twitch

Your eyelid is twitching. You're sure everyone can notice it, yet when you look in the mirror, it'll probably stop. These involuntary muscle spasms of the eyelid can drive you crazy, lasting just a few minutes, or a few days. There are different factors that can set your eyelid off, these are the most common triggers:
~ Fatigue or lack of sleep
~ Too much caffeine
~ Physical or emotional stress
~ Anxiety
~ Extended exposure to the computer or bright lights
Here are some remedies you can try, they might not help, and certainly won't hurt:
~ Warm compress to the eye
~ Gentle massage
~ Lower caffeine intake
~ Extra sleep
~ Tinted glasses for computer use
If an eye twitch does not go away within a week, is accompanied by pain, or extends to other parts of the face, then it's time to consult your doctor.

Fragrance Faux Pas

Most people enjoy a little perfume or cologne. A LITTLE!   We can all appreciate a whiff of some really nice perfume or cologne, but being stuck in an elevator, airplane or movie theater next to someone who overdoes it can be a real turn-off. Beauty.com has some application tips for fragrance:

1103-perfume_bd.jpg~  Apply with a cotton ball to your pulse points, it's usually enough..
~  Avoid applying perfume to your hair, it can interact with other products in there.
~  Don't double up. If you like perfume, use unscented body lotion.
~  When attending a function with a lot of people, you'll be competing with a lot of scents, don't go overboard just because you're dressed up.
~  Less is more. Some people may have a more sensitive sense of smell, err on the side of caution.

Also, consider the environment. If you're attending a wine tasting or a nice restaurant, keep in mind people would rather smell what they're enjoying than your scent.

You're No Doctor!

The Dangers of Self Diagnosis

With all the resources available, more and more people are searching for medical information or advice on their own. Beware of self diagnosis!  Unless you're a doctor, you're no doctor! L. Ann Binstock, of HealthMonitor.com, warns us how self diagnosis can go wrong. With access to countless medical websites, many people fall into the self diagnosis trap, and it can be dangerous. Here's why. Many chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis or heart disease, may trigger secondary symptoms and cause complications.  It's critical you discuss any questions with your Doctor, they've got the expertise and training to diagnose and treat your symptoms more accurately.

Van Gough's Ear

Most of us have heard the story about Vincent Van Gough cutting off his own ear, wrapping it up, and giving it to the woman of his desire. But according to two German historians who authored the book "Pact of Silence", it was all a big cover up. After studying inconsistencies in the police and medical reports, and some of Vincent's letters, they've come up with the theory that Van Gough was actually upset with fellow artist and good friend, Paul Gauguin. The two got into a fight outside a bordello, and it was actually Gauguin, a known fencer, who sliced off the famed ear. But after the fact, the two made a pact to keep it a secret, and made up the story to avoid arrest. What became of the gift wrapped ear, remains a mystery.

Fireflies

For much of the US, nothing says summer night quite like the glow of fireflies.  So what's all the flashing about?  Fireflies or lightning bugs aren't really flies at all, they're in the beetle family.  They have just the right chemical mix in their photic organ that when mixed with oxygen, produces light.

Different species of lightning bugs use different flash patterns to attract the opposite sex that's right for them. The ones you see in the air are most likely males. The females tend to perch on vegetation and signal from there. They get into a bit of a flash conversation, and if she likes what he has to flash, she signals him down to her leaf.

Dry Cell

If you're off to the beach, or just out in the rain, you can keep you're cell phone dry without a fancy case. Consumer Reports experts have put the zippered plastic baggy to the test, and it passed. In most cases you can really text, dial and even talk right through the baggy.  And the same goes for your MP3 player, camera or e-reader.

And here's another tip, the snack size plastic bags will fit most devices a bit more snug, they are smaller than the sandwich size and might even slide into your pocket.

Monkey See, Money Do

Bananas are one of natures handiest foods, just ask any primate. But you're probably peeling them all wrong. Here's how to do it monkey style...

Primates peel bananas from the bottom up, this way that white stringy substance stays with the skin. Just pinch the stem-less end, watch it split, peel and enjoy.

Some other tips for a better banana, take them apart when you get home from the store to slow down the ripening. They'll ripen faster while connected, and even more in an open paper bag.

Middle Child

Once a third child is born, that makes someone the middle child. So, is being a middle child all it's NOT cracked up to be?  After two kids, the dynamics in a family really start to change. The parents are outnumbered, and the kids all have their place.

After three, that middle child not only needs to share their stuff, but their place too. But according to Dr. Robert Needlman, Pediatric Behavioral expert, a middle child may have less expectations put upon them, which gives them the freedom to follow a more individual path. Middle children also tend to work harder at creating a close circle of friends. They often pick up better strategies to get what they want, such as negotiation and cooperation.

So middle child, you may not be the oldest, or the baby, but chances are you're a force to be reckoned with.

 Tanning Trend Fading

Historically speaking, the suntan trend is a relatively new one. As recent as 80 years ago, Europeans and North Americans kept their skin as white as possible. Parasols and brimmed hats were hot summer items. Tanned or weathered skin was associated with menial outdoor work. But in the 20's, sun therapy became popular to treat conditions such as fatigue and tuberculosis, and seaside vacationing was a hit with the in crowd.

Tanning hit it's unhealthy peak in the late 50's and 60's when metallic UV reflectors were all the rage. The Beach Boys' Endless Summer album, covered in aluminum foil, worked like a charm for the ultimate skin cancer enhancer.

Although the unhealthy trend of tan may be fading a bit, only time will tell when pasty pale and parasols will be all the rage again.

 He Said, She Said

What the other gender doesn't get.

Whether you're from Venus or Mars, chances are you're doing something to make the other gender uncomfortable. Glamour magazine says these female habits tend to freak guys out:
Man and woman silhouetteWearing uncomfortable shoes.
Doing sad things on purpose, like watching sad movies or listening to sad music.
Reading your guy's horoscope.
Asking hypothetical questions.
Now for the list of what guys do that women don't get:
Channel surfing.
Wearing the same thing over and over.
Acting helpless when sick.
And, shall we say, indiscreet bodily noises.

Sexy Shellfish

Is there any truth to oysters being the ultimate aphrodisiac?
According to research, oysters release sex hormones. A team of US and Italian chemists found oysters, clams and mussels all contain the compounds that do the trick. The compounds in these shellfish stimulate the secretion of testosterone and oestrogen in humans.

But Harvard professor Robert Shmerling says we need more research with human subjects to prove the link between seafood and libido. Any volunteers?

                      Break Down

Regardless of what car you're driving, you could break down or get a flat, and it's important to have an exit plan. Jon Linkov of Consumer Reports has the do's and don'ts:

If your car is running, exit the road if possible, even if you have a flat. A new wheel is less important than your safety.

If you have to pull off to the side of the road, take into account your path to get back on safely.

Don't let the car idle. Heat from the car could ignite grass underneath.

When it's safe, get out of the non-traffic side and raise the hood. Stand far away from your car, standing too close to make that phone call or wait for help could be a fatal mistake.

If possible, make yourself as visible as you can, exposing any brightly colored clothing or items you may have in your car.

                                                                                                    Flip Flop Facts

Nothing says summer fun footwear like the good old flip flop, but the flip flop fad is nothing new.

Flip Flops, they've existed in one form or another for over 6,000 years. The term flip flop is more recent of course, and is actually a trademark owned by a German company. The rubber version we've become accustomed to flopping around in has changed considerably over the centuries and from culture to culture. Ancient Pharaos would flip in footwear made from papyrus and jewels, while Romans would flop their military into sturdy leather flats.

The Japanese version called zori's started to appear stateside after World War II as soldiers brought them home as keepsakes. After the Korean War, the rubber version took hold of our toes and flip flops flourished through the 1950's.
